Inhabitant of Scotland, part of Britain; or
person of Scottish descent. Originally the
Scots were a Celtic (Gaelic) people of N
Ireland who migrated to Scotland in the 5th
century. Although English is the main
language, a distinct dialect called Lallans
is spoken in the Scottish Lowlands. Scottish
Gaelic is spoken by 1.3%, mainly in the
Highlands. Norse elements are found in the
dialect of Shetland.
